MARSHFIELD — Fire up, central Wisconsin! That red-hot, powerhouse band Copper Box makes a return appearance at Chestnut Avenue Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27.
A perennial Chestnut Center audience favorite, Copper Box wows with its accordion-fueled Americana roots music, southern soul, and quality musicianship.
Danny Jerabek (accordion, keys, vocals, cornet, sousaphone, etc.) and his wife, Michelle Thull Jerabek (bari saxophone, vocals, guitar, washboard, etc.) first met as youngsters performing on stage with their families' polka bands. Once in their teens, they crossed paths again and eventually realized they were meant to be together.
Danny and Michelle began writing songs, formed the band Copper Box in 2002, and the rest is history. The band's current line-up includes the highly regarded talents of Drew Hicks (bass, guitar) and Jason Van Ryzin (drums).
Frontman Danny was given an accordion from his grandfather at age 9, and taught himself how to play it. Inspired by Steve (Esteban) Jordan, "the Jimi Hendrix of Tejano Accordion," he began to "rock out" and improvise, to think a little more "outside the box." He has been featured at the International Accordion Festival in San Antonio, Texas and the National Accordion Festival in Houston, Texas as well as at the Cotati Accordion Festival in Cotati, Calif., and on national TV.
The support of family, friends and fans has kept Copper Box both recording and "on the road" for more than twelve years. The band has performed intimate shows in 150-seat theaters and small clubs as well as large, main stage festivals nationwide with artists such as The Little River Band, Buckwheat Zydeco, Little Feat, Little Big Town, Peter Frampton, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Lou Gramm, Marcia Ball, C.J. Chenier, Brave Combo, Terrance Simien, W.C. Clark, The Doobie Brothers and REO Speedwagon.
They have been honored with Americana Artist of the Year 2009 and 2012 (WAMI), People's Choice 2009 (WAMI), Specialty Instrumentalist of the Year 2010 and 2011 to Danny Jerabek (WAMI). Copper Box has recorded seven albums, the most recent released in November, 2013 entitled "After the Rain."
